MORNING MAYHEM WITH CHRIS HICKS ON THE MIX

5/8/08

Hey all you listeners out there in Radio Land,

If you are like me, and have allergies (mostly SEASONAL ALLERGIES) then you know that it's getting bad out there.  Just yesterday, while coming back from lunch, I noticed two people walking down North Union Street with painter's masks on their faces.  Being a funny guy, it would make me laugh, but in all seriousness...it was a brilliant idea.  The light bulb in my head kicked on and I thought to myself, being ever considerate to those that listen and read these bits on the website, why not give advice on seasonal allergy relief.  So here we go, Twin Tiers...and remember...these are from personal experience...consult your physician before you do any of these treatments:

HOT CLOTHS OVER THE FACE:  Works well to freshen up, and to help relax the sinuses, and partial swelling on the eyes.

SALINE SINUS CLEANSING:  A good "Nose Wash" works wonders for me, but beware the gag reflex if you are not careful.  My grandmother used to put our heads to one side, tell us to breathe through our mouth AND don't swallow, then pour the saline solution in one nose, and allow gravity to allow the "yuck" come out the other nostril.  (hey...it works for me once in a while)

CLEAN THE EARS:  Ok...here's something to ponder.  Did you know that when you have a head cold, your hearing goes a bit off...at least mine does.  It is caused by either wax buildup, or even the dreaded mucus buildup in the eustachian tubes.  Get some Murine to clean out the wax.  Gramma used to use Peroxide to loosen the wax (and fight off infections), then wash it out with warm water.  Afterwards she would use just a drop or two of mineral oil to keep the ear passages moist after the treatment.  (personal note:  The ear is an orifice to the sinuses as well, so treat them carefully.)

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS:  Vitamin-C is a good vitamin, as well as the others to help battle those baddies that get into your system.  Unfortunately, some people can't digest and utilize Vitamin-C like my wife, Sheri.  If you take suppliments to help boost your immune system...GOOD FOR YOU.  I do daily...it may be costly, but with the cost of medical treatments on the rise...SAVE UP!

Finally...CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN:  Your primary care physician can help you in regards to treatment.  The categories I listed above are easy remedies, to help your relieve SOME discomforts, but I recommend seeing your physician if these don't help...and this is coming from my mother, a nurse of more than 40 years dealing with 3 kids with multiple medical problems...(one was mental, and guess who that was.)

All things aside, take good care of yourselves this time of year, and if you have bad seasonal allergies, and see someone down the road walk with a painters mask over their nose and mouth, then you might want to consider doing so as well...it's for your health as well.

Before I forget, This saturday is the end-all for Star of the Southern Tier...8PM at The Press Box.  Come on down and cheer on the competitors, and we'll crown the 2008 Star of the Southern Tier.  Sunday of course is Mother's Day...get those cards mailed TODAY people...and if your mother is no longer around, send flowers to the location to show how much you care and think of your mom...REMEMBER:  Memories make up half of our mortality, and that is what keeps us going on through the lives of others.
